USES IN AROMATHERAPY
Mind/Emotional:
Physicians and herbalists described Spearmint to be uplifting and balancing, citing its ability to restore and energize the body. As it is milder than Peppermint, it is less likely to be over-stimulating when too much is being used.
The sweet and invigorating aroma of Spearmint works to enhance mood, improve focus and concentration, boost positivity and optimism. It can help comfort emotional stress through its relaxing and cooling action on muscles and nerves that feed them.
Body/Physical:
Even though Spearmint is thought to be the ‘gentler’ form of Peppermint, they have different chemical constituents and hence, their therapeutic actions are relatively different other than the shared minty scent and digestive indications. In other word, Spearmint is not the appropriate replacement of Peppermint.
Nevertheless, due to lower level of Menthol, Spearmint has a sweet and softer scent; as well as milder effects on skin which will not likely cause skin irritations – making it ideal for children, the elderly, and those with sensitive skin.
The stimulant properties of the oil work on the muscles, nerves, brain, blood circulation, immune system and metabolism. Useful for spasmodic cough, abdominal cramps and spasms, muscle cramps, and nervous convulsions, it is said to also help body burn fats. It works to restore organ and bodily functions to optimal health by repairing cells, tissues and nerves damages.
Used topically and cosmetically, it helps revive the skin’s elasticity and resilience by lightening signs of aging, uneven skin tone and appearance of wrinkles, thanks to its antioxidant quality.
Spearmint can impart cooling sensation to relieve itch associated with dryness and skin irritation. Its anti-inflammatory benefit is used therapeutically to cool red and swollen or inflamed skin.
Its anti-bacterial effect makes it an ideal skin cleanser for treating wounds and injuries; as well as to cleanse pores and tighten skin that may promote speed up healing of minor skin abrasions.
In aromatherapy, diffusing Spearmint oil is said to relieve headache, reduce cough symptoms and nasal congestion caused by excess phlegm and mucus build up in nose and throat to enhance easier breathing.
Its mildly stimulating properties make it a great tonic oil following an illness.
